100 Hour Yoga Teacher Training

100 hours

A 100 hour yoga teacher training sits below Yoga Alliance's 200 hour registration threshold, which makes it a foundation course rather than a stand-alone teaching credential. It suits practitioners who want a structured, immersive deep-dive into asana, alignment and the basics of sequencing before committing to a full RYT 200 program — and it suits dedicated students who simply want to study their own practice more seriously without any intention of teaching.

Most 100 hour programs run as a one- to two-week intensive, often inside a retreat setting, and cover the same core pillars as a full teacher training at a lighter dosage: posture and alignment, an introduction to functional anatomy, breath and pranayama basics, and an orientation to yoga philosophy. Because it isn't a Yoga Alliance registered credential on its own, most schools structure it so the hours count toward a 200 hour RYS program if a student decides to continue.

If your goal is a teaching credential you can register with Yoga Alliance and use to get hired, treat this as a stepping stone rather than a destination — you'll still need to complete a 200 hour program (see our 200 Hour Yoga Teacher Training guide below) to earn RYT 200 status.

Who this is for

Best for practitioners with at least six months to a year of regular practice who want a deeper, structured introduction before deciding whether to pursue a full 200 hour certification, and for anyone who wants to study yoga seriously without a teaching goal.

Format & duration

Typically delivered as a one- to two-week residential intensive at a retreat centre, though some schools offer it as a part-time weekend format over several months. It is not itself a Yoga Alliance registered course — check with the school whether the hours are creditable toward a full RYS 200 program if you plan to continue.

Frequently asked questions

Can I teach yoga with a 100 hour certificate?

Not as a Yoga Alliance Registered Yoga Teacher — RYT 200 is the minimum registration Yoga Alliance recognises. Some independent studios that don't require Yoga Alliance registration may still hire 100-hour graduates for basic classes, but most employers ask for at least RYT 200.

Do 100 hour training hours count toward a 200 hour certification?

Often, yes — many schools designed their 100 hour intensive as the first half of their own 200 hour program. Confirm this directly with the school before enrolling if continuing to RYT 200 is part of your plan.

How is a 100 hour training different from a 200 hour training?

It covers the same broad subject areas — asana, anatomy, philosophy, pranayama and teaching practice — at roughly half the contact hours and without the depth of practicum and assessment that Yoga Alliance requires for RYS 200 registration.
